J. Kevin Judice, Ph.D. - Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Judice was most recently head of the medicinal chemistry group at Genentech, where he provided strategic direction to the growing small molecule effort within the company. Prior to Genentech, he served as Vice President of Medicinal Chemistry at Theravance, Inc. (formerly Advanced Medicine, Inc.), a role in which he had line responsibility for more than 90 of the company's roughly 180 scientists. During his early years at Theravance, Dr. Judice served as project team leader for the group which discovered telavancin (TD-6424), a rapidly bactericidal agent which is currently in Phase 2 human clinical trials. Subsequent to that, Dr. Judice oversaw all of the medicinal chemistry efforts during a period in which two more compounds were advanced to clinical trials — including an asthma agent which was successful in Phase 2 clinical trials and a compound (currently in Phase 1) to treat overactive bladder disorders. An additional five compounds have been nominated as development candidates by Theravance since its founding in 1997. Dr. Judice received his bachelor's degree at Texas A&M, his Ph.D. at UCLA, and was awarded an NIH postdoctoral fellowship at Berkeley.

He was a founding scientist at Maxygen where he led diverse projects and developed the core gene shuffling technology over a period of over eight years in research. He led the team that discovered and partnered a gene shuffled interferon that was licensed by Roche for development as a next generation therapeutic for HCV. Dr. Patten received his bachelor's degree in Biology at the California Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. at Stanford University. He was awarded a Damon Runyon Postdoctoral Fellowship at U.C. Berkeley where he did pioneering work on the structural basis of antibody affinity maturation and directed evolution of antibodies in the laboratory of Professor Peter Schultz.

Most recently, Dr. Schmidt was the head of the analytical chemistry group at Theravance, Inc. This group of 25 people was responsible for the physical characterization of research compounds, for bioanalytical chemistry, for high throughput purification and for the analytical chemistry of compounds in Phase 1 and 2. In particular, Dr. Schmidt was involved in the research aspects, the manufacture, and the analytical chemistry of Theravance's antibiotic telavancin which has now progressed to Phase 3 trials. Previous to Theravance, he was the head of the analytical department at Telik, Inc and, before that, created the HPLC column line for the Rainin Instrument Company. Dr. Schmidt received his B.S. from Iowa State University, his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology and was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University. In addition, he was an Associate Professor at the University of Windsor and spent 2 years at the Institute of Chemical Analysis at Northeastern University.
